New Mills Wildlife Photography
Derbyshire England
New Mills is a Mill Town, built around the confluence of two rivers; the River Goyt and the River Sett, nesteld in the Goyt Valley, shrouded by the hills of Kinder Scout and the Peak District.
The wildlife here reflects the environment, with Kingfishers, Herons, Dippers and Wagtails along the river, and Buzzards, Kestrels, Curlew and Lapwing higher up on the moorland.
I take my camera with me when I’m on my morning walk before work, or out on the Mountain Bike, and try to showcase our local wildlife. Not yet perfect. I’ll keep trying!
Looking for Videos? Come on, this way!
Take a look below the Kestrel and Kinder Downfall please. On you go!
Don’t miss my silly videos.
They are so silly that I had to put them lower down than the very sensible photos, almost on a separate page really.
They started off as sensible attempts to upload video footage, but then they end up turning into something that has a life of its own.
They are so silly that I had to hide them over there, just on the other side of Kinder Downfall.
Not as silly as that Kingfisher over there though, look at the size of that fish! It took it a good ten minutes to gobble it down, and a further 10 minutes resting before it could fly off.
Heron flying over the waterfall at Torrs Hydro, New Mills.
If he is perched somewhere near a waterfall, I wait for him to take off, hoping to capture him in focus flying with a waterfall curtain as a backdrop. Patience is required, but I think it is worth it
“The Kingfisher”, a short video Movie Trailer made using iMovie on Macbook, music from iMovie
. I was just trying to edit a simple video of a Kingfisher eating a massive fish, to put on Instagram, and it all got rather silly and compicated. The fish was huge though, nearly the size of the Kingfisher. It took about 10 minutes for it to swallow it. It then sat for ages, perhaps too heavy to take off.
Dipper and Heron flying over the waterfall at Torrs Hydro (next to “Archie” the Archiedes Screw), Torrs Riverside Park, New Mills.
I saw the Dipper in the water above the waterfall, and just waited for it to fly off, hoping it would come my way with the waterfall behind it.
Very difficult to get the Dipper in focus, and needed lots of patience and luck. The Herons are much easier, slower and more predictable!
Finding Mrs Kingfisher - A short video on a cold and frosty morning on the banks of the River Goyt, New Mills, about trying to get some good footage and photos of Mrs Kingfisher

There’s also some rare photos of a local Sparrowhawk, near the Torr Vale Tap and Millenium Walkway, who was very watchful whilst a flutter of Long-tailed tits were jostling about.
Look out for the treecreepers,, and the photos of the light playing on the river and the archway over the river, the foot of the double viaduct
Kingfisher Diving
Common Kingfisher, Autumn, River Goyt, New Mills, Derbyshire UK.
Not the best footage, but hey, its a Kingfisher in New Mills, so its pretty special!
I have put about 20 or so photos into this reel gallery. Check out the two Goosander minding their own business, oblivious to there being a Dipper manically splashing about behind them, and a Kingfisher flashing past!
